End Polio Now Education Pack

End Polio Now Education Pack

In 1979 Rotary International made it their mission to eradicate Polio, starting with a major inoculation programme in the Philippines. Alongside the Bill Gates Foundation, the World Health Organisation and UNICEF, Rotary has helped make this dreaded disease is a thing of the past in developed countries and we are just a hair’s breadth away from making this the case throughout the world. Back in 1988 there were 350,000 cases of Polio a year and it was endemic in 125 countries. In 2017 this has been amazingly reduced to just 16 cases in 2 countries. Can we make 2018 the year no new cases are recorded?
Our fellow Rotarians in the Doncaster St. Leger Club have presented at school assemblies for many years to raise awareness and funds. They have just updated their educational pack, using materials by local teacher and children’s author/illustrator Phil Sheppard. The pack is self-contained and is designed to help in the delivery of Key Stage 2 Citizenship Programme. It can also be used in conjunction with KS2 Mathematics and English Programmes. It consists of an introductory sheet, 30 booklets and a class poster, a memory stick with a PowerPoint animation and a ‘Purple for Polio’ pack. This is an excellent class project.
Sitwell Rotary Club is approaching all primary schools in the area who offer Key Stage 2, aiming to provide them with a free pack and an introduction in how to use it.
When there are so many negative stories in the press, we are delighted to be involved in a really positive situation, and we look forward to ending Polio.
