From the President April 2014
We have two major fund raising events left this year which need support from the whole club. May 23rd sees our golf competition at Wath. We have 12 teams entered but we could still do with a few more teams if we are to achieve our target of £2,000 to be raised from the event. If you are a golfer then please consider at least playing in the competition even if you can’t field a team. If you are not a golfer then please consider giving a donation towards the prize fund – several of you have done so already and many thanks for your generosity but we could still do with further donations.
On 28 June, we have our Aperitif du Grand Depart. I will be cycling round all the clubs in South Yorkshire ( a distance of 100 miles) to collect donations for the Marie Curie charity. Our club has already resolved to support this project and donate the equivalent of 10euros per member to the cause. It’s still early days for this project to have gone through the cycle of Council and Business meetings of the other clubs but I have supportive messages and informal indications of support from Barnsley Rockley, Stainborough, Mexbrough, Sheffield Vulcan, Sheffield, Abbeydale, and Rotherham clubs so this project is definitely on. Apart from helping Marie Curie, this is an excellent opportunity for publicising the work of Rotary with so many clubs taking part. We will certainly be noticed (and possibly cursed) as we go round the circuit as there will be motor cyclists in front, Shaun’s Landrover with all its flashing lights behind, possibly a yellow car and bringing up the rear will be an open topped bus courtesy of Dave Taylor. As you are aware, the day finishes with a French themed meal at the Carlton Park Hotel and we have booked for a minimum of 80 people. It is essential that our club supports this meal in good numbers and I promise you that it is going to be a good night with one or two surprises by way of entertainment. Please sign up in the binder so that we know we are safe from being surcharged for having insufficient numbers.
I know that every president asks a lot but please support the club in all its endeavours – the time for relaxing is at the president’s party which is on 22 June and at which I shall be pleased to lift a few glasses with you all. Many thanks for your continuing commitment.
