Sponsorship of Dibas Subedi

Submitted by waudbypeter@ho… on 17 August 2022

Dibas Subedi is the student from Balmadir Secondary School on the outskirts of Pokhara city in Nepal whose secondary and further education was sponsored by Rotherham Sitwell Rotary from 2017 to 2021.  The sponsorship was arranged through the Fishtail Fund which is managed by the Rotary Clubs of Pokhara (Nepal) and Dronfield.  For one contribution of £500, Rotherham Sitwell Rotarians supported Dibas to succeed in his education and progress onto higher education or training.

Like so many other young people, the final stages of Dibas’s education were significantly disrupted by Covid-19.  Despite this, he showed significant resilience in maintaining his studies and was rewarded with success in his exams, particularly English, Nepali, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics.

Ever since 2017, Dibas had said that he wanted to be a Civil Engineer but following further information and guidance he secured a place on a Bachelor of Science degree course in Biotechnology at the University of Kathmandu.  Unfortunately, this four-year course was much more expensive than other degree courses and despite extensive efforts to raise the additional funds needed, the trustees of the Fishtail Fund were unable to pay the university fees.

Thankfully the story did not end here.  With the financial support of Dibas’s wider family, he was eventually able to commence the course in late 2021.  In his most recent letter he tells us that he has done well in his first semester examinations and is enjoying his studies.

On his return home for his semester break, Dibas was invited to update Pokhara Rotary on his progress.  Whilst there he was surprised to receive a laptop which had been paid for by the generosity of a few Rotherham Sitwell Rotarians. As you see from his letter, he is “motivated to do well in my study due to your help”.   Hopefully, contact will be maintained with Dibas on his journey.

Meanwhile the Fishtail Fund is still sponsoring around 25 students and is not currently inviting sponsorship for others.  Instead the Fund is concentrating on building up resources to support its current Fishtail Fund students if they are good enough to match its criteria for College and University which is called Fishtail Plus.
