Annual Woodpecker Golf Competition

Submitted by Anonymous on 7 October 2015

The annual Sitwell Rotary Woodpecker Golf competition was held at Royal Crookhill G.C. on Tuesday 8th September with circa a dozen age hardened Golfers anxious to take the crown from the current holder Johnnie Woffenden.

Woffenden clouted his opening drive down the hill with some anticipation that it would be found in the grounds of Conisborough Castle and at this point the remaining contingent thought it a good idea to turn round and go to the Pub.

However Jonnie was weighed down with a handicap of 14 and eventually ended in the middle of the field - John Turner's style of run-up to drive the ball produced a remarkably good score which could only have been better had he used a cricket bat. A long drive from players behind hit Peter Keary with some impact on his stomach but thank goodness no harm was done to the ball.

Other players including Shaun (that should have gone in) Doherty and senior Rotarians Bhimpuria and Fearn produced some of their best form.

The late summer conditions favoured a steady and experienced player with a very high handicap and it was therefore of no surprise that eventually Peter Keary came though the pack to take the Cup together with a bottle of the finest French shampoo.

The event was concluded with home made steak pie and a pint of the Landlord's finest ale at the Three Tuns - Stainton and then we all went home to get in bed before our 9pm deadline.

We hope to see even more members attend next year and enjoy the game and the fun.

(Thanks to Mike Frost for this excellent report)
